Roughly 1 out of 4 deaths worldwide are caused by infectious diseases. Though the rates of mortality have been on a steady decline in the more affluent countries over the past couple of decades, they remain a much larger problem in "developing" countries in Africa, South America, and parts of Asia. A better educated public, not just in terms of healthcare providers, will help curb this global challenge and lead to a healthier planet for us all.
